Gilles Peterson’s ‘This’ Club at Bar Rhumba, 2004

Gilles Peterson’s ‘This’ Club at Bar Rumba. 2004.
Charcoal on Canson Paper. 75 cm x 55cm.

Drawn live onsite at Bar Rhumba during Gilles weekly Monday Night club, which ran for about 10 years, before closing in 2007. One of the few jazz-orientated dance clubs to (a) run on a week day, and (b) to be completely packed-out every week until it finally closed circa 2007. The music was always good and often went off in a Latin Jazz or a Latin House-Afro House direction. I guess it was the magical ‘Gilles- factor’ which kept it so popular for such a long time on such an unlikely day of the week.

This was the first of 3 or 4 drawings I made down there, as I lived in Vauxhall from 2004-2007, which made this a convenient dancing/drawing studio for me. On the left you can make out the metal banisters and stairwell, which led up to the entrance and street level, opposite The Trocadero. Known dancers were allowed access to the special DJ’s drinks fridge behind the decks for a free beer or a water! A most welcome and unprecedented privilege.
