Kerri Chandler & Friends Live at Southport Weekender

Kerri Chandler & Friends Live in The Powerhouse Arena at Southport Weekender at Minehead 2014.
Pastel on Murillo Paper. 2013 or 2014.

I went to 3 Southport Weekenders at the Minehead site (2012, 2013 & 2014). The first one I remember for the outstanding performance of Gregory Porter, but did no artwork. The second one I attended I made a lot of tiny sketchbook drawings and one larger drawing inside the Suncebeat Dome which was never finished because the company that supplied the Dome bought my drawing when it was still at an early stage.

My third visit, in 2014, was my most productive visit. The finished portraits of Kerri Chandler and Giles Peterson were presented at this weekend, which is how I got to meet Kerri, had the honour of being invited to draw ‘live’ on stage during his Dejay set in the Dome, and also during the performance of his Live Music ensemble “Kerri Chandler & Friends” in the much bigger Powerhouse space. He was joined by fellow vocalists including Robert Owens & Arnold Jarvis.

This is the drawing I made during the live music set, where I had an unusual viewpoint from the back of the stage, right next to the drummer, Ross Hillard. So its more from a musician/perfomers point of view, looking out from an elevated stage onto a vibrating, yellow-lit crowd.

Kerri moved around a lot on the stage, some of the time singing near the front, and other times playing keyboards, which is why he is depicted twice in my drawing. I managed to stand it sitting quietly in my seat looking and drawing for the whole set, but when the encore happened I could contain myself no longer, and jumped up to dance.
